Fiat is perhaps best known for small cars – as in the Topolino, Cinquecento and more recently, the Uno. Now it's gone to the other extreme with a Hummer-sized 4x4 show car at the Bologna motor show.

The comparison with the Hummer is not an idle one; the spectacular "Oltre Fiat" ("oltre" means "beyond" in pastaspeak) is also derived from a military vehicle, in the case the Iveco LMV (light multirole vehicle), a technically advanced beetle-crusher that has won a FCLV (Future Command and Liaison Vehicle) contract for the British Army and has also been chosen by the Italian Army.

It's a seriously big vehicle, standing on a 3230mm wheelbase, 4870mm long, 2200mm wide and 2050mm tall

. It has a blocky, slab-sided profile with cutaway wheel arches and interesting detail work on the front and rear bumpers.

Fiat has underlined the car's practical basis with a sunshade over the windscreen and recessed door handles (so as not to catch on bits of bundu while bashing it).

The crew-cab version seen here balances comfortable seating for five with a decent-sized load bed. The long tubular structure above the cab is reminiscent of the rollover bars on off-road racers – and a full roll cage inside the cabin as well.

Can you spell idiot-proof?

The Oltre Fiat retains all the technical features of the LMV with permanent all-wheel drive, independent suspension with coil springs and coaxial dampers all round and 500mm ground clearance

All-wheel drive is engaged automatically when needed and all three differentials can lock; Fiat claims its GT mudplugger can handle a lateral slope of up to 40 percent and climb slopes of 80 percent.

Its wading depth is 850mm, which can be increased to 1.5m with is a snorkels is fitted to the inlet and exhaust pipes.

It's motivated by a three-litre, four cylinder Iveco F1C, common-rail turbodiesel with a variable-geometry turbo and intercooler for which Fiat quotes 136kW at 3700rpm and 456Nm at 1800 rpm. Big grunt!

It drives through a six-speed automatic transmission to take the vehicle to more than 130km/h, notwithstanding its fully loaded weight of about seven tons.

The show car was fitted out for Fiat by custom house RRS; it runs on low-profile, 26" Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico 315/40 XL (Extra load) tyres and has Sabelt seats and Alpine audiovisual systems
