THE ALFA ROMEO 147 HAS WON ITSELF ANOTHER IMPORTANT TITLE BY CLAIMING THE PRESTIGIOUS ANNUAL '24 ORE DI AUTO' HELD AT THE MISANO CIRCUIT
The Alfa Romeo 147 has won itself another important title by claiming the prestigious annual '24 Ore di Auto' held at the Misano circuit.
The race, held on the 11th and 12th of May, was organised as usual by 'Cars' magazine on the Adriatic Misano race track, and the winning car this year was a 1.6-litre TwinSpark powered Alfa 147.
This latest endurance victory comes just weeks after a JTD-powered Alfa 147 scorched to victory in the Nuerburgring 24 Hours, its third consecutive win in what is self-billed as the 'world's toughest race'. A former winner of highly prestigious 'European Car of the Year' award, these two latest victories prove that the Alfa 147, recently given its mid-life update, is just as dynamically fresh as ever.
The specialist Italian review publication each year organises a marathon twenty four hour race that puts to the test high-volumes models in order to determine their levels of reliability, durability and of course performance. This year the magazine chose petrol and diesel engined models from the hotly-contested C-segment, picking twenty one cars from eleven different manufacturers. All the cars chosen had 115 bhp available. As well as the Alfa 147 1.6TS, other strong rivals for the race included a Renault Megane 1.6 16v, Audi A3 1.6 FSI, Toyota Corolla 1.6 VVT and Honda Civic V-TEC Sport.
The driving duties were entrusted to a number of leading Italian and foreign motoring journalists, which included three of the top European specialist car magazines: Autocar from Great Britain, Autovisie from Holland, and ViBilagare from Sweden.
The journalists were joined by regular test drivers, and all drivers rotated between the cars over the twenty four hour period. Television coverage was provided by the cameras of Motor RAI TG2.
Always pushing the cars to the limit, the only stops permitted by the organisers were regular pit visits to change the pilots, refuel the cars, and to change the Michelin-supplied 'control' tyres and the brakes. The winning Alfa 147 1.6TS completed 642 laps of the Adriatic circuit which equated to 2606.5 kilometers. During the 24 hours they replaced the front brake pads once and the front tyres three times. The car used 626.1 litres of petrol during the run, which meant that the Alfa 147 travelled 4.163 km per litre of petrol.
IL 24 ORE DI AUTO, MAY 11/12, 2005 - RESULT: PETROL CATEGORY:
1st Alfa Romeo 147 1.6 TS 642 laps (2606.5km) av. speed 108,542 km/h, 2nd Honda Civic 1.6 V-TEC Sport +4 laps, 3rd Citroën C4 Coupé 1.6 16V +7 laps, 4th Toyota Corolla 1.6 VVT-i +11 laps, 5th Mazda 3 1.6 16V +12 laps, 6th Ford Focus 1.6 Ti-VCT +13 laps, 7th VW Golf 1.6 FSI +15 laps, 8th Audi A3 1.6 FSI +16 laps, 9th Renault Mégane 1.6 16V +19 laps, 10th BMW 116i +21 laps

INTRODUCTION
If this doesn't do it, it's hard to know what will. We're talking about Alfa Romeo's eternal quest to create a car able to rival BMW's ubiquitous 3-Series: not an Italian BMW, but a car of equivalent worth and desirability which retains its Italian characteristics (the good ones, at least).
http://view.fiatautopress.com/photo/1/106-2-4107.jpg
The 159 is the first Alfa to be launched under new Alfa CEO Karl-Heinz Kalbfell, formerly of BMW and Rolls-Royce and a declared Italophile when it comes to cars. The design and engineering of this 156 replacement were almost finished when he arrived, but his arrival has certainly concentrated Alfa minds and encouraged those who wanted this car to be as good as possible. It goes on sale in most of Europe very soon, but its UK launch is delayed until the end of the year to make time for the planned overhaul of Alfa dealers and their customer service attitudes - the chief reason for the handsome and likeable 156's slide down the sales charts.
http://view.fiatautopress.com/photo/1/106-2-4078.jpg
If we're talking about the V6, this would be a five-star rating. The four-wheel drive transmission means there's none of the bad behaviour suffered by the 156 GTA, which aimed to channel 250bhp through its front wheels alone, and the V6 Q4's handling is a delight. It points like a rear-wheel drive car and corners quickly with a gentle tail-out stance, yet the front wheels pull it straight should too much be asked of the rears. Similarly, there's almost no understeer when entering a corner quickly, because the Torsen-C centre differential diverts torque rearwards if the front wheels have too much to cope with. That 47/53 torque split is just the starting point, alterable as needed. It all makes for a highly enjoyable, very fluid drive.
http://view.fiatautopress.com/photo/1/106-2-4085.jpg
The steering is very quick to respond, high-geared like the 156's, but the action is more progressive now and the turning circle is no longer bus-like. It feels slower in the nose-heavy, front-drive version of the 2.4 JTD, and there's more understeer as you'd expect, but the 2.2 JTS has the agility of the V6 if not quite the flowing style. This four-cylinder car's steering is a little too light for its directness and accuracy, though. All three 159 variants, the ones samples by 4Car to date, are a responsive, eager drive.
All have a good driving position, too, with firm but comfortable seats and clear instrumentation. The handbrake, to the right of the centre tunnel, means that drivers of left-hand drive 159s (such as those we tested) will be stroking passengers' arms inadvertently, though, and for right-hand drive the handbrake might be too near to the driver for easy operation. Brakes are progressive in action, the gearchange is smooth and accurate. All 159s have a separate starter button, operated after the 'key' is placed in a slot, so there's no conventional steering lock and ignition key to damage knees in an accident
Μιλησε κανεις για ηχητικη απολαυση....Αλφα Πραγμα(επιστροφη της καδενας)
Clearly the V6 is fastest - it does 149mph and reaches 62mph in 7.0 seconds - and its flat torque curve makes the performance easy to exploit. It sounds delicious, too, the usual Alfa V6 note reproduced convincingly on this all-new engine. The 2.2 JTS also sounds correctly Alfa-esque, this time much like the old 2.0 Twin Spark complete with crisp-edged exhaust note. It has rather more low-speed pull than that engine, though, while still reaching 62mph in 8.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 138mph. The petrol engines' natural enthusiasm is one reason why you might favour them over a diesel, but the 2.4 JTD is as muscular and sonorous a unit as ever. It's very energetic with its newly-enhanced outputs of 200bhp and 295lb ft, too, able to reach 142mph and sprint to 62mph in 8.4sec - so it's notably quicker than the 2.2 JTS as well as more relaxed and more economical. Torque figures for the 2.2 and 3.2 petrol engines, incidentally, are 170lb ft and 237lb ft respective
SAFETY AND SECURITY RATING:
The usual boxes are ticked here, with up to eight airbags (all 159s have at least seven), active front head restraints to reduce whiplash, and stability control - Alfa Romeo calls it VDC rather than ESP - as standard. This Vehicle Dynamic Control includes a hill-holder device acting on the brakes to stop rolling back on a hill start. Tyre-pressure monitors are standard, and the whole car is built into a structure claimed to be stiffer even than BMW's very stiff new 3-Series.The lack of a mechanical steering lock improves the safety of the driver's knees (there's also a knee airbag), and the fact that the lock is electronic improves security. The pedals are designed to collapse under heavy impact, too. There's no EuroNCAP rating yet but it would be surprising if the 159 didn't score at least four stars.
COMFORT AND EQUIPMENT RATING:
Here's an Alfa with, at last, a genuinely good ride. It doesn't run out of front suspension travel like the 156 did, it dives less under braking and its damping is better controlled. The taut, responsive handling isn't achieved at the expense of excessive firmness underfoot, and a sport suspension option is neither available nor necessary. Wheels can be up to 18-inch diameter, although 16in or 17in are usual and inevitably make for better absorption of small bumps. The smaller, lighter engines lead to a slightly more fidgety ride, so the 2.2 JTS proves less serene than, say, the 2.4 JTD and there's a hint of engine shake over ripply surfaces. But it's still a big improvement over the 156 and compares well with Audi and BMW rivals. Road and wind noise are low enough not to be an issue.
http://view.fiatautopress.com/photo/1/106-2-4108.jpg
There's fair space in the cabin, even in the back, and the rear seats' backrests fold down to increase boot space. Be careful leaving the front passenger seat, though, because it's easy to catch a knee on the protruberant dashboard.
Air-con is dual-zone as standard, triple-zone optionally, and there's an air-quality sensor. Other equipment, standard or optional, includes MP3 capability in the CD player, a Bose sound system, a built-in phone, Bluetooth compatibility, Connect telematics to go with a large sat-nav screen, and parking sensors. Seats can be trimmed in flock fabric, Alfatex, leather or soft-touch 'Frau' leather, or you can have a Sport interior with so-called Tibet leather.

Alfa Romeo 159 - In depth
http://car.kak.net/modules.php?op=mo...e&sid=4380
The undisputed star of the recent Geneva International Motor Show, the Alfa 159 now makes its market debut. The founder of the new family that will replace the 156, and therefore the heir to a successful model (from 1997 to the present day over 680,000 units have been sold), this original saloon takes up the baton, to become the new benchmark in its segment. Born from Alfa's long, acknowledged experience in the production of prestigious sports saloons, the Alfa 159 heralds a new generation of cars from Alfa. The 159 Project is the result of innovative design methodologies developed by an international team that has succeeded in combining performance and formerly irreconcilable targets - extremely entertaining driving, outstanding performance and distinctive styling - with outstanding levels of safety, comfort and sturdiness, without compromise.
1)Passive safety
http://view.fiatautopress.com/photo/1/106-2-4132.jpg
One aim of the new Alfa 159 Project was to set the benchmark for passive safety. To do this, the Alfa Romeo engineers designed and developed the new "premium" floorpan, with high performance materials, multiply sheet metal and laser welding. The architecture of the bodyshell also benefits from numerous measures such as the use of boxed elements that are connected rigidly both transversely and vertically, three load lines in the front, longitudinals that run the whole length of the car, built-in structures and a larger number of spot welds around structural nodes. The result is the excellent torsional rigidity of the bodyshell, the best in its segment at over 180,000 daNm/rad
2)Front suspension and steering
The new high wishbone layout adopted on the front suspension is the ideal solution to guarantee precise control of wheel movement, with a clearly defined steering axis. The architecture was borrowed from racing and endows the car with outstanding dynamic performance, and extremely sensitive, pinpoint steering. The high double wishbone was already used on the 156 and has been further improved on the new Alfa 159.
First of all, the steering axis was brought closer to the centre of the wheel, increasing the Ackerman level (to increase parallel wheel movement when steering) for better response when cornering, thanks to the steering which is the most direct in its category. The steering of the new Alfa 159 has an excellent ratio (12.7° steer for every degree of wheel steer) which translates into a more direct response for the driver, more responsive steering and better stability control. What is more, painstaking analysis of the matching of the steering geometry and the wheelarch volume, made it possible to achieve high steering angles even with the largest tyres, and this significantly improved the turning circle between kerbs (11.1 metres).
http://view.fiatautopress.com/photo/1/106-2-4130.jpg
Great attention was paid to the new wheel upright where it connects to the levers, exploiting the available space inside the rims in full, and this has significant advantages in terms of lateral rigidity; the size of the coaxial damper spring unit has been increased to improve its capacity to absorb road roughness; the aluminium lower wishbone combines excellent structural characteristics and a much lower weight; the upper aluminium arm fits a pair of dry friction sliding bushes, a solution chosen because it is stronger and more reliable, and guarantees a more progressive action. And finally, the suspension is connected to the chassis by a closed geometry frame which is stiffer than the previous solution which had a simple crossbeam.
3)The rear suspension of the Alfa 159 now features:
• A higher anchorage point of the longitudinal link, which is now positioned higher than the centre of the wheel, allowing the suspension to perform a longer, more flexible stroke, with an optimal response when negotiating an obstacle.
• The aluminium upright, fitted with a third generation, extremely rigid hub, supports the connection bushes for the camber lever and the longitudinal link.
• The bi-tube spring-damper unit is larger than other conventional solutions, this achieves a better compromise between handling and comfort.
• The camber link, which allows the static camber to be adjusted and produces a geometry capable of guaranteeing a good camber recovery with wheel shake to ensure that the wheel rests perfectly on the road and wear is thus uniform, even when the car is pushed to the limit.
• The rear hydraulic bush guarantees excellent filtering of roughness, and allows the wheel to retract slightly when negotiating an obstacle.
• A high yield steel crossbeam isolated from the bodyshell by four elastic bushes that dampen high frequency vibration.
4)The Alfa Romeo Q4 four-wheel drive system
The new Alfa 159 proposes an evolution of the permanent 4x4 system with three differentials (with a Torsen C self-locking unit at the centre) already adopted on the Crosswagon Q4. The heart of this project is the "Alfa Romeo Q4 four-wheel drive" system which splits torque constantly and dynamically between the four wheels, reaching the highest levels of active safety and sportiness. The Torsen C self-locking differential sends drive torque 57% to the rear wheels and 43% to the front. The system also guarantees excellent traction in all grip conditions by automatically checking slip.
The torque split between the front and rear axles is modulated constantly by the Torsen C central differential on the basis of grip. This feature harnesses sportiness to enhance active safety. Modulation is mechanical, continuous and gradual, to enhance the perception of optimal, enjoyable, easy driving. There are no gaps in the torque delivery. Where grip is concerned, the behaviour adapts gradually and smoothly to changing road conditions. This "mechanical" control is backed up by electronic stability control, which boosts performance and safety margins, in line with the Alfa Romeo philosophy. The four-wheel drive car is the state of the art in technical terms and offers important advantages.
• Q4 permanent four-wheel drive with a Torsen C self-locking differential makes for better roadholding, entertainment and smooth responses. Other technological archetypes with electronically controlled joints do not achieve the optimal balance between understeer and oversteer or the smoothness that are innate in the Alfa 159, and translate into superb active safety.
• The torque split in favour of the rear axle makes driving even more entertaining, because it makes the car even easier to handle, without detracting in any way from stability during sudden lane changes on the motorway, or other emergency manoeuvres.
• The ability to travel safely in poor grip conditions without the aid of electronics in torque split for constant driving pleasure.
We could say that the Alfa 159 Q4 interprets four-wheel drive from the Alfa Romeo point of view: it is basically a "mechanical" system enhanced by cutting edge electronic technology to guarantee maximum comfort and entertainment, combined with superb performance and absolute safety.
5)Main technical features
The new 6-cylinder engine of the Alfa 159 continues the strategy begun with the 4-cylinder engines, and adopts the JTS (Jet Thrust Stoichiometric) direct injection system. This is an original Alfa Romeo concept that injects the fuel directly into the combustion chamber with a stoichiometric mixture optimised to enhance performance, but also guarantees low consumption and respect for the Euro4 emissions limits.
Numerous important components have been designed from scratch and are exclusive to the Alfa Romeo V6 engine. To start with, the cylinder head is aluminium and has 4 valves per cylinder, 2 camshafts per bank with the "Twin Phaser" continuous variable valve timing (intake and exhaust) already adopted on Alfa Romeo 4-cylinder engines and now applied on a 6-cylinder engine for the first time. Variable valve timing allows the phase angle on both cams to be varied by 50°, maximising performance on one hand, because the best phase can be chosen at all engine speeds, and reducing consumption and emissions with partial loads on the other.
At the same time it is possible to optimise the volumetric efficiency of the engine over the whole operating range, exploiting the degrees of freedom offered by variable valve timing: this means a very favourable torque curve, with 90% of peak torque available from 1800 rpm (290 Nm) and maintained over a broad range (from 1800 rpm to 6250 rpm). The valves are controlled by a roller finger system, with low mechanical dissipation, and hydraulic uptake of tappet play.
Another peculiar feature is the camshaft drive system which uses a primary chain that transmits the drive to the heads via two secondary chains. Tension is provided by automatic hydraulic tensioners which need no maintenance at all during the life of the engine.
The 185 bhp 2.2 JTS and the 160 bhp 1.9 JTS
The 4-cylinder engines of the Alfa 159 are extremely light because they have aluminium cylinder heads and crankcases (they are approximately 20% lighter than the engines they replace
Another peculiar feature of the 2.2 and 1.9 JTS engines that equip the Alfa 159 is the camshaft drive system which uses a chain; unlike a conventional belt drive, this system has the advantage of not needing to be replaced during the lifespan of the engine.
And to guarantee the performance one expects of an Alfa Romeo, the timing diaphragm has also been reviewed, adopting larger profiles which made it possible to achieve a maximum power output of 6500 rpm (the system is fine tuned to operate at over 7,000 rpm, the maximum rev speed allowed by the electronic speed limiter).
That is not all. To achieve the best volumetric efficiency, the maximum lift reaches 10.3 mm, while to enhance vibrational and acoustic comfort, the engine is equipped with two counter-rotating balancer shafts which virtually eliminate the second degree alternate forces that are typical of straight-4 engines. The generous power delivery of the engine (80 bhp/l on the 2.2 JTS) made it necessary to adopt sodium-cooled exhaust valves.

Alfa Romeo 159
Should Italy's most famous sporty saloon be better than Germany's? Alfa says its 159 - the eagerly anticipated replacement for the 156 - has got what it takes to finally beat the BMW 3-Series; and there is good reason for the firm's optimism.
Understandably, the 159 looks like a bigger, chunkier 156 - itself a fair success when it was launched. However, the original didn't turn out to be quite the BMW rival hoped for. A beautiful body was no use when the car broke down...
This time, Alfa is promising reliability, and revamping its dealer network to coincide with the 159's UK debut next February. That way, it will get the start it deserves. Top of the range is the 3.2-litre Q4 version driven here. Powered by a 260bhp V6 and four-wheel drive, it has enjoyed the benefit of an intensive test programme at Germany's notorious Nurburgring. It will be joined by a 1.9-litre model with 160bhp, a 185bhp 2.2 and two turbodiesels boasting 150bhp (1.9-litre) or 200bhp (2.4 five-cylinder).
Alfa's new 'Premium' platform underpins the 159, and will be used for the upcoming Brera coupe, too. Virtually nothing is carried over from the 156, and the petrol engines - all with variable inlet and exhaust timing - are based on General Motors' designs with Alfa-originated cylinder heads.
The Giugiaro-styled body is handsome and adopts an imposing stance. Its tough shoulder line is enhanced from the 156, although the concealed rear door handles have been ditched. Inside, the cabin has a chunkier, higher-quality feel, more space, extra air vents and a starter button. But while the seats and driving position are very comfortable, there are still flaws. The handbrake has been positioned

to the right of the centre tunnel, hard up against the chair. Frankly, it is a bit of a mess! We also tried the 2.2-litre 159 which, as with the V6, has direct injection. And despite their GM genes, both petrol engines feel and sound like proper Alfa units.
The 2.2 has a crisp exhaust note, revs freely and pulls strongly from low speeds. The V6 is very tuneful, and feels powerful and smooth. On top of that, it has a great high-revs wail. Of the diesels, we drove the 2.4 JTD, which is torquey, long-legged and surprisingly refined. All 159s have six-speed manual transmission, while Selespeed sequential boxes are optional. Do these cars handle well? You bet! Pick of the bunch, not surprisingly, is the all-wheel-drive Q4 V6. Through corners its capable chassis feels assured, and there are huge amounts of grip on offer. Pushed hard, it seems almost rear-driven. The 2.4 JTD is nearly as good but not quite so agile, with its front-wheel drive (4WD is optional) and heavy nose.
Less weight on the leading wheels makes the 2.2 keener into corners at the expense of a more fidgety ride and reduced steering feel. All variants cope with bumps better than a 156, though. The steering response is still ultra-quick, but it is more progressive and the turning circle - woeful in the previous-generation cars - is usefully tighter.
So has Alfa finally created a model that will leave the BMW 3-Series bloodied? It is a tough call. Although the Italian certainly has the style and performance, reliability will not be proven overnight and buyer confidence will take time to build. However, the 159 is definitely a step forward from the 156; we cannot wait to drive one in the UK.

Νέα Alfa Romeo 159: Ένα αστέρι γεννήθηκε...pigi-e go
21/6/2005 11:09:27 μμ

What do you get when you cross the flair and romance of the Alfa Romeo with the rock-solid dependency of Germany's finest? An Italian saloon car that is supremely seductive, says John Simister
http://www.whatcar.com//Car/AlfaRome...2165560312.jpg
3.2
Model: Alfa 159 3.2 Q4
Price: £28,000 approx, on sale December
Engine: 3,195cc, V6 cylinders, 24 valves, 260bhp at 6,200rpm, 237lb ft at 4,500rpm
Transmission: six-speed gearbox, front-wheel drive
Performance: 149mph, 0 to 60mph in 6.9 seconds, 24.6mpg official average
CO2: 167g/km
This dramatic new Alfa Romeo is almost a fine example of a German car. What? Well, clearly the notion is nonsense because an Alfa is surely as Italian as a car can be. That is its fortune, because to drive an Alfa is to enter a world defined by values of aesthetics, engagement with the driving process, aural treats from eager engines, and a flurry of form for its own sake which may or may not add to pure function (which, on its own, is a bit German).
http://www.whatcar.com//Car/AlfaRome...2165560313.jpg
But rational people like rational cars, and an Alfa is a bit frivolous, risqué even, for some cautious souls. Or so they think. They buy BMWs or Audis or Mercedes-Benzes instead, because these cars are German and therefore cooze quality, and are backed by fantastically efficient dealers, and confer upon their owners a kind of quasi-discerning conformity.
Simple notions for people with simple prejudices. Now, please, welcome Alfa Romeo's handsome, engaging, tuneful and rather daring (to those secure in their big-brand Germans) 159. And face up to reality.
http://www.whatcar.com//Car/AlfaRome...1655559313.jpg
Alfa Romeo's recently installed CEO is a German, Karl-Heinz Kalbfell, who has spent most of his working life with BMW and latterly its Rolls-Royce division. He's also a deep Alfa enthusiast. This is the ideal blend of attributes to make Alfas credible among those who default to the German brands but would secretly like something racier. Kalbfell is aware of the Alfa brand's emotive value, and his mission is to translate that into the sales that Alfas have long deserved. Having the right cars is one thing, having dealers keen to treat customers well is another. He is determined to fix both.
http://www.whatcar.com//Car/AlfaRome...1655559310.jpg
Sorting out the dealers will be well under way by the time the 159 reaches the UK at the end of this year. And the car itself? It's a cracker. Alfa Romeo spark meets German-standard solidity, quality, integrity. But Kalbfell can't take take credit for that, because the design and engineering were largely complete before he arrived. Alfa's creators - including another German, design chief Wolfgang Egger - already knew what was needed, but Alfa's newly acquired German gene transplant doesn't preclude passione e emozione.
The idea is that the 159 keeps the best attributes of the beautiful but frustrating 156 and adds the Germanic dimension hitherto absent, which will make for buyer confidence and long-term satisfaction. So the style is clearly a 156 evolution, bigger, roomier (now with folding rear seats), less classically beautiful but more assertive. Where the shoulderline used to fade out and in again as it travelled through the doors is now a solid, tough ridge, and the concealed rear door handles are no more. But the stubby tail is similar, as are the nose (inspired by that of the Brera coupé concept) and the interior look.
There are almost no parts carried over from the 156. The longer-wheelbase platform is all new, and in shortened form will also underpin the production version of the Brera. The petrol engines are also new, with Alfa's own cylinder direct-injection heads and fully variable valve timing atop blocks from General Motors, the Fiat group's erstwhile business and technology partner.
First to try is the 185bhp 2.2 JTS, likely to be the range's centre of gravity in the UK just as the 156 2.0 was. It's simultaneously similar and novel to sit in, with familiar dials sunk into pods and angled towards the driver, but with a new feeling of quality and substance. The leather look of the dashboard is convincing, and a 159 interior in black, with contrasting beige or dark red leather seats, oozes Italian style in a highly covetable way.
Firmly comfortable seats and a fine driving position set a promising scene, so it's a pity the handbrake is awkward to use. It's on the right of the centre tunnel, to make space for storage, and in this left-hand-drive car it means I'm groping my passenger if I'm not careful. There'll be less intimacy in a right-hand-drive 159, but the lever will be too close to your pulling arm.
To the road. And have no fears about the new engine's Alfa-ness, because this one sounds almost exactly like the old 2.0 Twin Spark, (possibly the most charismatic four-cylinder production engine of recent years) with a lovely edge to its exhaust note and a crisp, eager response. It pulls better from low speed than its predecessor, too, although the 159's ample mass "just shy of a ton-and-a-half" blunts the thrust a bit.
So far, so excellent. It gets better. The 156 had an unusual steering response, initially soft then very fast. It held the road well but made a real meal out of some bumps, especially the too-stiff Sport-suspension versions. All is fixed in the 159. The steering is more progressive in its response, although still keen and a little too light, and apart from a bit of fidget on ripply roads, the 159 rides well.
Next up, the 2.4 JTD, the familiar five-cylinder turbodiesel, now uprated to 200bhp and a massive 295lb ft of torque. This is the head-meets-heart model in the range, with brilliant overtaking ability and a meagre appetite for fuel.
The range also includes a 150bhp, four-cylinder JTD turbodiesel and a 160bhp petrol engine, both of 1.9 litres, but the pinnacle comes with the 3.2 V6 JTS Q4. The quickest 156, the GTA, had 250bhp, front-wheel drive and questionable decorum in its traction and suspension. This ultimate 159 has 260bhp but four-wheel drive to transfer it to the road, nominally 57 per cent of it to the back wheels, 43 per cent to the front, but alterable as grip conditions dictate.
This is it. This is the best Alfa Romeo saloon there has ever been, the car whose halo will best dazzle the German opposition. Not only is it rapid, with smooth torque across a broad rev-range and lots of energy at the top of it, but it flows round corners with the nonchalance of an Audi laced with the point-and-drift thrills of a BMW. It's taut, responsive, interactive, all those driver-pleasing things, yet it rides comfortably too.
Here is the Alfa that we have wanted for years. This top 159 will probably cost about £28,000, but the range should begin at about £10K below that. If you're bored with the obvious German rivals, it looks like there's an enticing escape route at last.
